Portable Lamp Design
This presentation documents the design process for "Gnome," a portable lamp conceived for HAY. The design aims to create a product that aligns with HAY's established minimalist and contemporary aesthetic, while incorporating my playful design language. The project involved thorough research of HAY's design language, defining a target market (25-45 year olds with an appreciation for design), developing mood boards and form research, creating preliminary sketches, technical drawings, and finally, prototype photos. The final design is a lamp with a simple, rounded geometric shape with a cone-shaped shade that swivels to direct the light.
Acquired Competencies
Research and Analysis
I strengthened my ability to thoroughly research and analyze a brand's design language and target market, effectively integrating these findings into my design process.
Concept Development
I improved my skills in generating and refining design concepts, exploring diverse forms and aesthetics before finalizing the design, as shown by my mood boards and preliminary sketches.
Technical Proficiency
Creating the detailed technical drawings showcased a growth in my understanding of product manufacturing and my ability to translate design ideas into precise specifications, indicating increased proficiency with CAD software.
Material Selection
My CMF research honed my understanding of material properties and their influence on the overall aesthetic and functionality of the product.
Problem-Solving
The iterative design process, evident in the various sketches and revisions, demonstrated improvement in my ability to identify and solve design challenges.
Communication
The presentation itself reflects my enhanced ability to clearly and concisely communicate the design process and the final product.
Brand Alignment
My success in aligning the final design with the HAY brand demonstrates improved skills in adapting my design to a specific brand identity.
Prototyping & Iteration
The use of prototypes and, presumably, feedback based on them, indicates improved skills in utilizing prototyping to refine the design.
Project Management
The successful completion of a multi-phased project within a given timeframe suggests growth in my time management and project planning skills.
